What Makes a Unit ADA Compliant?

An ADA accessible unit meets the U.S. Access Board’s standards for temporary and portable facilities. That means a door opening at least 32 inches wide, ground-level entry with a ramp instead of steps, at least 60 inches of interior turning space so a wheelchair can rotate fully, and grab bars mounted at the correct height.
These are sometimes called handicap portable toilets, portable handicap toilets, or wheelchair accessible units. Different names, same federal specification. See our resources page for the standard itself.

Specifications

Minimum 60 inch by 60 inch interior floor space, a door at least 32 inches wide that swings outward, and grab bars rated to support significant weight. The holding tank runs 60 to 70 gallons, matching or exceeding a standard unit, since accessible units often see heavier use as the only accessible option in a cluster.

What’s Included

  • Delivery, ramp placement on level and stable ground, initial stocking, and pickup.
  • Multi day rentals include scheduled servicing so the unit stays clean and stocked throughout your event.

Who Needs an ADA Compliant Portable Toilet

Event planners

Federal guidance calls for at least 5 percent of the portable toilets at a public event to be accessible, with a minimum of one unit regardless of event size. Weddings, festivals, and fundraisers in public spaces or open to ticketed guests fall under this.

Construction site managers

Crews with members who need accessible facilities, or sites hosting public tours and inspections, should pair standard units with at least one accessible unit.

Municipalities and public works

City events, park programs, and public meetings at places like Hart Plaza or Campus Martius Park need accessible facilities as standard planning. See our government rental page.

Private hosts

Even a backyard party benefits from one accessible unit if a guest uses a wheelchair or mobility device.

Problems This Solves

You are not sure if your event legally needs one

If it is open to the public, in a public space, or ticketed, the answer is almost always yes, with at least one unit required and more as your total count grows.

A guest or worker uses a wheelchair

A standard unit cannot provide the door width or turning space. An accessible unit can.

You want to avoid a compliance complaint

Placing accessible units inside the same cluster as your standard units, not off to the side, keeps you compliant and avoids the appearance of an afterthought.

What Detroit Renters Say

We needed an accessible portable restroom for an outdoor event and wanted to make sure there was enough room for guests who needed it. The ADA unit was a much better fit than a regular portable toilet. Delivery was handled professionally and the setup looked appropriate for the event.

— Eric, Prosser

The ADA restroom was clean and easy to access. We were coordinating an event with several different needs, so having the right type of unit available made the planning much easier. Everything went smoothly on delivery day.

Frequently Asked Questions

At least 5 percent of your total unit count, with a minimum of one regardless of size. An event with 20 standard units should include at least one accessible unit in addition.

Nothing. Both describe the same unit built to federal accessibility standards, including the wider door, ramp entry, and interior turning space.

If the site is crew-only, requirements can differ from public events. If it hosts visitors, inspections, or public access, an accessible unit is recommended. Call and we will confirm what applies to your project.

It needs a firm, level surface with a slope under 5 percent so the ramp works safely. Paved areas, compacted gravel, and wood platforms all work. Soft or sloped ground may need leveling first.

Accessible units are in more limited supply than standard ones, so one to two weeks ahead is recommended for weekend events, especially June through August.
